"The Black Lady of The Castle" Art Print
The ghost of the “Black Lady” is supposedly that of a 9th century nun called Editha who was the founder of her order. They were based at a convent in Polesworth.
Following the Norman conquest, Robert de Marmion was gifted many lands in the area including the castle and the land on which the convent was situated. Robert de Marmion then took the fateful decision to expel the nuns from the convent and his land.
In their anger, the nuns prayed for Editha to rise from her grave to exact revenge.
It was following a lavish banquet at Tamworth Castle when the 3rd Baron Marmion saw a vision of Editha, now a saint, who prophesied that unless the nuns were allowed back to Polesworth, the Baron would meet a premature death.
Before vanishing, the vision of Editha struck the Baron and his cries awoke the whole castle.
He was so tormented by this vision that he ultimately made a confession to a priest and restored the nuns back to Polesworth.
It is said that Editha still walks about the castle and there have been sightings of her on the staircase and bedroom.
