A motte-and-bailey castle is a castle design of European origin usually with a wooden or stone constructed central tower (or keep) on a raised area of ground called a motte. These were usually protected with a deep ditch. Due to their ease of construction, usually with unskilled labour they soon spread across northern Europe and provided formidable protection against attack.
It was following the Norman conquest that this concept was introduced in England and Wales. In the case of Tamworth Castle, it was Robert Despenser, the first owner following the victory of William I, who further fortified the castle in this way.
To do this day, Tamworth Castle remains one of the best preserved motte-and-bailey castles in the UK.
