Tamworth was the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia during the Heptarchy of seven kingdoms just before the formation of England as one country. Of particular note is it's castle. The original Anglo Saxon castle no longer exists and the castle we can now see originates from Norman times.
